Different, Not Broken.

Men sometimes struggle to find the right response when someone cries in front of them.

But since becoming an ADHD Coach, I’ve become a lot more comfortable sitting in that space - letting the tears come for my clients, letting the emotions unfold.

I have noticed a pattern of the trigger for my clients’ tears in coaching sessions.

It is the moment when it finally lands:

You’re not broken. You’re just different.

Your brain is different. The constant comparisons ADHDers make to others? It’s like comparing apples and oranges.

And when that truth hits - really hits - it brings a wave of emotion.

Sometimes it’s relief. Sometimes it’s grief. Sometimes it’s a bolt of clarity or finally giving yourself permission to be you. Cue the tears….and usually an apology - classic ADHDer!

Because most Adult ADHDers are masters of masking. Which means they have learnt how to act like everyone else to fit in, to stay safe from being exposed or rejected. Masking might feel necessary but it is exhausting and not true to who you authentically are. Even the possibility that you could take your mask off, that you could stop performing and be accepted for who you are, build a life based on what you want to do and who you want to be - that is huuuuuge!!

And that is where the tears come from, I think.

Societally we are getting better at accepting difference. And that includes adult ADHDers - who have been masking for far too long.

Taking the mask off and finally understanding you’re different, not broken can change everything!

So if you are ready to take your mask off and shed a few tears at the relief and possibility that comes with that, I am here with my new found ability of holding comfortable space as the tears flow…..
